Adaptive Outdoor Safety Council

The Adaptive Outdoor Safety Council has a twofold mission: (1) to promote safety, education and leadership for persons all ages with disabilities (physical and/or developmental, chronic medical diagnoses, chronic illnesses, and other special health needs who participate in adaptive outdoor sports (snow sports, water sports, and wilderness adventures) and (2) to promote stewardship and protection of the outdoor environments where adaptive activities are offered and enjoyed.

Environmental Safety

It is our responsibility to do all that we can to make sure the outdoor environments were we provide programs will be better for tomorrow’s children.

Each of us must work to be good stewards protecting the natural resources where adaptive programs are offered and enjoyed.

As a function of the AFFI, Inc.  programs, our instruction highlights how to:

Conserve
              Protect
                          Restore

All Outdoor Environments!

AFFI, Inc. practices Environmental CPR.  We encourage you to do the same!

We Practice and Teach Catch and Release

In the early 1960s, respected leaders of the FFF realized that to preserve quality of fishing in our streams this could be met with the promotion of “Catch and Release” fishing.  The public balked and but slowly realized that the practice of catch and release was a useful management tool to provide better fishing for the future.  Nowadays – catch and release is a way of life and a fishing ethic that we do without even blinking an eye.  The FFF still remains the leader on this subject of why, how and when.

  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  3. Pack it in and pack it out
  4. Properly dispose of what you can't pack out

  5. Leave what you find

  6. Minimize use and impact of fires

  7. Respect wildlife

Personal Safety

While fly fishing and fly tying are low risk - low impact activities, there are a few inherent risks in any outdoor recreational endeavor and any adaptive sport.  We teach instructors and guides to carefully work with each angler through verbal and non-verbal communication to strive to achieve the highest level of independent activity and enjoyment without compromising anyone's safety.  This requires a mutual commitment to:

  • honest self-assessment
  • open dialog
  • staying within one's ability level
  • not being resistant to activity modifications or the use of assistive devices
  • allowing discomfort and fatigue to tell us that it is time for a break or a change
  • adherance to all safety guidelines
  • cooperation

Personal Floatation Devices, Glasses, Hats, Wading Staves, and other Safety Devices

We take every reasonable and customary precaution as well as those required by law to ensure the safety of our participants.  Aboard any type of watercraft, AFFI requires that all participants wear a USCG-approved PFD at all times.  When casting and fishing, we wear hats and protective eyewear.  We provide the safest possible wading conditions for our anglers when fishing in streams.  All of our AFFP's have completed a state-approved boater safety course, first aid, and CPR training.
